Finding the Safest SUV

  • Multi Angle Rearview Camera
Families shopping around for the safest SUV in New England should pay a visit to a New England Honda Dealer to see what the 2016 Honda Pilot has to offer. Honda’s SUV has always been one of the safest on the road, and the new model has earned both a Five-Star Overall Vehicle Safety Rating from the NHTSA and a 2015 Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS (on models equipped with forward collision avoidance technology).

“The 2016 Pilot is not only the most technologically advanced Honda vehicle on the road today, but the top choice for family SUV buyers interested in safety performance,” said Jeff Conrad, Senior Vice President of the Honda Division. “No other midsize mainstream SUV on the market today can match the comprehensive suite of Honda Sensing advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies on the new Honda Pilot.”

Honda Sensing Safety Technology

The 2016 Honda Pilot has five different trim levels available, and both the Touring and Elite trims come with Honda Sensing safety technology as standard (drivers can upgrade for Honda Sensing on EX and EX-L trims). These new safety amenities are designed to help bring a driver’s attention back to the road and even automatically slow the vehicle down if the Pilot detects an accident could occur.

Without these advanced technology features, the 2016 Honda Pilot still earns the impressive 2015 Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. Honda Sensing includes four different features on the Pilot, helping to make it one of the safest SUV options on the road:

Collision Mitigation Braking System

Collision mitigation braking system: With a built-in radar sensor, the Pilot can detect how far away a vehicle is and whether you are approaching too quickly. First it alerts a warning noise, and then it can apply brake pressure automatically if needed.

Road Departure Mitigation

Road departure mitigation: At speeds of 45-90 mph, the Pilot’s road departure warning system is active. If it detects that you are too close to the edge of the road, it sends vibrations to the steering wheel to alert you and can even apply torque and braking to keep you in your lane.

Foward Collision Warning

Forward collision warning:Combined with collision mitigation braking, forward collision warning uses a small front-mounted camera to detect vehicles in front of you, sending audio and visual alerts if you get too close.

Lane Departure Warning

Lane departure warning: If you start to drift from your lane without a turn signal on, lane departure warning will flash alert lights and provide audio warnings to bring your focus back to the road.

Safety Features Standard on Every Pilot

The 2016 Honda Pilot has a wide variety of standard safety features in addition to the available Honda Sensing package, including:

  • Multi-angle rearview camera: When you shift into reverse, the Pilot’s rearview camera system activates, giving you a wide-angle, top-down, and standard view of what’s behind you before backing up.
  • Daytime running lights: One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of an accident is to make your Pilot more visible. Standard daytime running lights make it easy for other drivers to see you during the day.
  • Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure: The very frame of the Pilot is built for safety, reinforced in key areas and designed to redistribute energy in the event of an accident.

Each Honda vehicle also includes 24-hour roadside assistance for the duration of its new vehicle warranty, covering jump starts, lockouts, flat tires, and more. We’ve only covered a few of the highlights of driving this SUV; see a full breakdown of Pilot safety features.

2015 Top Safety Pick+

Adrian Lund, the IIHS President, described the Pilot’s remarkable improvements, saying “[It] demonstrates Honda’s commitment to achieving the highest levels of safety performance. The Pilot’s crashworthiness ratings set a high standard, and its optional front crash prevention system will help drivers avoid some kinds of crashes to begin with.”

In order for a vehicle like the 2016 Honda Pilot to take home some of the top safety awards in the industry, Honda engineers had to go all out. In addition to scoring a “Superior” in Front Crash Prevention, the Pilot also earned top scores of “Good” in all five IIHS safety tests – Moderate Overlap Front, Side Impact, Roof Strength, Head Restraints and Seats, and the new Small Overlap Front.
